Picking a TV size usually comes down to guesswork: stand in the room, eyeball the wall, and pick something that seems big enough.
But the size that actually works has less to do with the wall and more to do with how far away you’ll be sitting. Go bigger than that distance calls for and the picture stops feeling impressive and starts feeling like too much, while the extra inches you paid for go to waste. Below is a chart of standard screen size recommendations based on viewing distance, how the math works, and some resources to dig into if you want to further nerd out.

How the Math Works
The sizes above are derived from the distance where a screen feels comfortable rather than overwhelming, regardless of the room, the size of the wall, or any other environmental factors. These numbers are based on SMPTE’s 30 degree viewing angle guideline, the industry standard for relaxed, everyday viewing. More aggressive standards like THX recommend sitting closer for maximum cinema-style immersion. If you want to go all in on immersion, go bigger than what we show here. If you want to focus on comfort, which most people prefer, the numbers above are the best guidance there is.
The formula: divide screen size in inches by 0.6, then convert to feet. That’s the minimum distance where the picture won’t feel too big for the room. Sitting closer starts to feel like more screen than the space calls for.
Rooms Matter, But Only Because of Space
A bathroom vanity or shower TV will always feel close, which is why our bathroom and shower TVs typically run 24″ to 32″. Kitchen cabinet installs sit at a similar distance, which is part of why our kitchen cabinet TVs top out at 32″ rather than going larger. A living room or bedroom mirror TV, where you’re sitting further back depending on the size of the room, can go as large as 75″.
